STUDENT ART GALLERY
Watercolors on Rice-paper workshops by Karen Mills
Jody's first 2 paintings ever!!  Red Peonies.  Bold and beautiful.
Jody's daughter wanted her mom's paintings to display in her
new apartment - that's the only reason Jody retrieved them
from the back of her car and asked me to frame them.  What
is even more remarkable is that Jody had never painted before
but had a thought 20 years ago (pre-kids) that art would be
something she would like to do someday.  Jody is a great
hair-stylist (she cut my hair!) and a fun dancer.
Nancy's First Painting
- Camellia
Nancy, a busy
attorney had never
painted before,
believing that her
children were the
creative ones.  This is
her first  painting!
Erica's First Bamboo
painting in color.
Erica, a radiologist had
such a stressful day at
work but look at what
she created that evening!!
Erica's own color blends
just came out beautifully.

Naisa's First Original
Composition.
Naisa, a busy
business analyst and
great swing dancer
had never painted
before.  After 2
semesters of
workshops, this is
Naisa's first original
painting inspired by
the roses in her
mom's garden.
Beautiful!
Jody's second
landscape painting -
Jody's son wanted this
painting for his new
apartment so Jody
retrieved it from the
back of her car and I
framed it for her.
Needless to say, Jody's
son never did get this
painting - it is now
hanging prominently
in Jody's living room
and her husband is
very proud of it!!

Tessie and Karen with their art !!
Tessie is a fabulous musician and piano teacher with her
first paintings and Karen (publicist for the Senior Center)
said her college art degree came in handy during these
workshops.
Anne's original landscape in Chinese Ink.  Stunning!!
Of course I had to 'force' Anne to get this framed when she
showed me her 'practice' landscape painting.  Anne is an
amazing fabric artist who makes everything from first principles.
Bay Area Camellia workshop - Oct, 2005
My friend Faye organised this workshop for her girlfirends, 3
aunties from Thailand and her mother-in-law from Brazil.  I must
say it was fun teaching with English, Thai and Hindi conversations
flying around.  Ahhh just like my childhood.

Teri's Amaryllis and Original Freestyle Art.  Teri is a middle
school teacher who has never painted before.  Her artwork on
the right originated from an orchid leaves practice exercise
which apparently created some amount of frustration in Teri
until she went home and in a fit of inspired creativity -
transformed it to the colorful painting on the right.  I am
amazed that Teri who had not painted before had such a strong
visual image in her mind and was able to translate that onto
rice-paper.

Naisa's first water-lilies painting !!  Like everyone else, she
was 'forced' to frame this by her aunty who wanted to
display Naisa's painting in her house.
Santa Clarita Senior Center Fall 2005 Workshop - Orchids
Sharon's original orchid composition   So delicate and
pretty!
Another Sharon original orchid composition painting on
Shikishi!  Mounted on a Gold Shikishi frame on the right.
Exquisite!
Jo Ann's original bamboo composition painting.
Beautiful!  She has captured the strength of
bamboo in those bold strokes!

Lorraine finally decided to frame her paintings as
Christmas/Hanukah presents for her family.  Aren't they
stunning?  Lorraine used to paint with oils way back when and
only started brush painting in September 2005.  The Iris painting
on the left is framed in a rosewood frame with a hand-made
paper trimmed mat.  The Vasquez Rocks painting on the right is
framed in a black shadow box - the painting is mounted onto
black hand-painted foamcore which sits above the white
matboard background.
Lorraine's Orchid painting - elegant beauty.
This was framed in a walnut frame and matted with
Thai hand-made paper which has great fiber textures
and some grass.  Looks great with rice-paper.

Nancy who is visiting from Canada, with her first
watercolors on rice-paper paintings (top center
column and bottom right column).  They look great
and are Nancy's own original composition!
Karen G-S with her beautiful pansies (top left column and
top row, 2nd from the right).  Both are Karen's own
original compositions - love the complex color
combinations and ruffled edges!
Leila's first landscape painting - Vasquez Rocks.   Stunning!  I am so
glad Leila decided to frame this painting.  Leila already has her own
distinctive style in her brushstrokes - it conveys a lot of spontaneity
and strength.  Now her whole family can enjoy her talents.
